Secure Shell, better known as SSH, is a cryptographic network protocol employed to execute commands on a remote hosting server or to exchange information between a hosting server and a client. Because the data exchanged by the 2 sides is protected, a third party simply cannot intercept it, which makes SSH a favorite means of managing a website hosting account. The commands which could be executed depend on the type of hosting service. On a shared server, in particular, the possibilities are limited because you'll not have root access to the hosting server, so you could just create/move/delete files, create and unpack archives, export and import databases, etc. They're all actions that are executed in the shared hosting account and don't require a higher level of access. By using a virtual or a dedicated server, you'll have the ability to set up server-side software or to restart the hosting server or only a specific service (web server, database server, etc.). SSH commands are submitted through a command line, and if you don't use a UNIX-like OS, there are plenty of applications for other OSs, which you can use to connect to the remote web server as well.

SSH Telnet in Semi-dedicated Hosting

SSH access is offered by default with some of our semi-dedicated server plans, while with others you can add it via the hosting Control Panel if required - even only for the current month. In either case, you'll be able to activate and de-activate the feature with just one mouse click via the SSH section of the CP. In the same spot, you'll find the server name, the port number and the username needed to connect to our platform. You will also find a box in which you can easily type the password you want to use, since it doesn't have to be the same as the one you use to log into the CP. For better protection, you could also change it as frequently as you want. A full list of the commands that can be performed in a semi-dedicated account is provided in our Knowledge Base, together with the syntax and a few instances. An extra feature after SSH access is activated shall be the ability to connect to your hosting space via SFTP through any FTP client which supports this kind of connections.
